New Albany, MS (July 9, 2021) – Around 8 a.m. on Friday morning, July 9, a fatal pedestrian accident occurred on a highway in New Albany.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the accident happened on MS-22 around the area of Myrtle. Two people were changing a flat tire on a woman’s vehicle alongside the road in the eastbound lane of traffic. Suddenly, an eastbound pickup truck collided with the two pedestrians.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other local responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. The two pedestrians who were struck, identified as 20-year-old Antavias Shye and 21-year-old Keon Williams, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
It is believed that the driver of the vehicle that struck them stayed at the scene, though police have not yet formally identified him.
The roadway was blocked in the area for an extended period of time.
No further details have been released but the investigation remains ongoing.
