Greenville, MS (June 07, 2022) - A woman and her unborn child died on Tuesday, May 31st in a single-vehicle crash that left four children in her care with injuries in Oktibbeha County.
The deceased, who has since been identified as 23-year-old Makayla Coggins, a resident of Maben, and her unborn child, sustained fatal injuries in a vehicle crash on US-82 in Greenville at about 3:30 p.m.
Troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol reported that Coggins lost control of her Ford Expedition, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and flip over into the median.
The four other children who were riding in the vehicle with Coggins were all hospitalized with moderate injuries.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Ms. Makayla Coggins, at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Passengers are in an unusual situation when it comes to being involved in a Mississippi car accident. An injured passenger is seldom liable for the crash, however, this does not protect them from being seriously injured during the impact.
Passengers are exposed to the same dangers that cause the same injuries as drivers, including spinal cord damage, brain injuries, and fractured bones. No matter what caused the incident, it is likely that a person other than the injured passenger is responsible.
Car insurance coverage is required of all Mississippi drivers. If a passenger is involved in an injury accident, this coverage is what will pay for any losses the passenger endured.
Often, bringing a claim against the insurer only yields a settlement offer that is so inadequate, that it will not even cover the victim's necessary medical bills. Anytime an insurance company makes you an offer, it should be reviewed by a practiced Mississippi personal injury lawyer before being accepted.
