Car crashes are no joke. Millions of people sustain serious injuries in auto collisions every year. Also yearly, tens of thousands of people lose their lives in car accidents in the United States. Car accidents are a leading cause of death among people ages 15-20 in the United States. Though we don’t like to admit it, it is extremely dangerous to ride in a vehicle. If you come into contact with a negligent driver, the likelihood of becoming involved in a collision skyrockets. Unfortunately, there is no way for you to know whether the people in the cars around you are paying attention to the road. You just have to trust that they are, and hope for the best.
For this reason, it is important for all drivers to remain alert, aware, and sober while behind the wheel of a vehicle. Cars have been called ‘death machines’ by the New York Times, in an article where they noted that more than 4,000 kids lose their lives in automobile accidents per year. This is even more alarming when you consider that over 90% of vehicle accidents are the result of driver error. No matter how you look at it, traveling by car is one of the most dangerous ways to get around. However, it could be made safer by drivers choosing to be more mindful while behind the wheel.
When you or someone you love has been hurt in an auto accident caused by a negligent driver, you may not know where to turn for help. The first thing you need to do after you sustain a serious injury in an accident is to seek medical attention. After you do this, the next thing to do is to contact a lawyer. It is important to speak to an attorney before you speak with anyone about your car crash. If you choose to speak with the insurance company before you talk to a lawyer, you may be tricked into settling for less compensation than you deserve.
The insurance companies, unfortunately, are trained to prey on crash victims in the days and weeks after their accidents, when they are considered to be at their most vulnerable. If they get ahold of you, they will do their best to get you to settle for cheap so they can close the case out as quickly as possible. Don’t let this happen to you! Call a lawyer as soon as you can.
