Gulfport, MS (May 27, 2022) – Serious injuries were reported in a pedestrian accident that took place on a major highway in Gulfport on Friday afternoon, May 27. 

According to Mississippi Highway Patrol officials, the accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-10 around the area of Canal Road. A pedestrian was walking near the eastbound lanes when they were suddenly struck by a passenger vehicle due to reasons that are not entirely known. The driver of the vehicle allegedly remained at the scene of the crash. 

Paramedics, fire crews, and several other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. The pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was rushed to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. They were allegedly taken from the scene by a medical helicopter due to severe injuries. Their condition is not known at this time. 

The roadway was blocked in all eastbound lanes of traffic for an extended period of time as police worked to clear the scene. Police had the scene cleared within several hours but, in the meantime, drivers were asked to use alternate routes.

The investigation into the circumstances of the accident remains ongoing.
