Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Mississippi

In 2020, Mississippi ranked the third most dangerous state for pedestrians. A total of 106 pedestrians lost their life, creating a fatal pedestrian rate of 3.57 deaths per 100,000 people. Many of these accidents take place in dark road conditions when it is more difficult for drivers to see pedestrians. Regrettably, there are many instances where people die as a result of driver negligence.

Drivers who are distracted are unlikely to see pedestrians nearby. This is particularly true when the road conditions are dark. Drivers who are texting on their phones, eating, or engaging in other actions that take their attention off the road can cause them to miss seeing pedestrians in the area.

In addition to distractions, speeding drivers are another leading cause of fatal pedestrian crashes. When drivers are traveling too fast for road conditions or in inclement weather, they are more likely not to see pedestrians traveling nearby. As a result, they are likely to strike them. Traffic accidents involving pedestrians that take place at a high rate of speed are often more severe than others.

Finally, impairment is another common factor that contributes to fatal pedestrian accidents in our state. When drivers are impaired, they may not be able to operate their vehicles in a responsible manner. Impairment can cause a driver to go off the side of the roadway and strike pedestrians that are traveling on sidewalks and on shoulders near the road.
