Jackson, MS – Khanh Van Duong, 56, Dogs Killed in House Fire on Hwy 29 N

Jackson, MS (January 16, 2023) – Police in Jones County are investigating a house fire that took the lives of a man, eight puppies, and two dogs on Monday, January 16. Information provided by Jones County deputies and the Jones County Fire Council shows crews responded to the scene at approximately 12:40 a.m.

The incident occurred in the 2500 block of Highway 29 North. A large wood-framed house with a large add-on was fully engulfed in flames. Police stated Khanh Van Duong, 56, along with his wife and daughter, were home when the fire started. 

Duong instructed his family to exit the premises while he went to rescue the family pets. His daughter and wife escaped to safety, however, heavy flames and smoke prevented Duong from exiting in time, and he lost his life in the fire. 

His body was found near the rear exit of the house. Police believe the fire started in the house’s addition, which appeared to serve as a storage area. One firefighter sustained injuries in the fire, however, declined transport to the hospital. 

Duong’s wife and daughter did not sustain any injuries.
