Belviq Lawsuit

Belviq

Mass tort lawyers at Mama Justice help victims in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee protect their legal rights after being harmed as a result of using Belviq, Belviq XR, and other brands of lorcaserin.

Belviq was a prescription medication provided to people who struggle with their weight. The pill was created to aid in weight loss, and for several years, patients across the country used Belviq, Belviq XR, and other brands of lorcaserin to help them drop pounds and take back their health. Unfortunately, this was not always the case.

Countless people who utilized this drug were subsequently diagnosed with cancer. Studies have since determined that these medications increased the risk of patients developing colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, and lung cancer, which led to death in some cases.

If you or a loved one took the prescription drug Belviq, Belviq XR, or another brand of lorcaserin, and were subsequently diagnosed with cancer, you may have legal options available to help you get justice. What is Belviq and How Does it Work?

In 2012, the prescription medication Belviq entered the market in the United States to aid in weight loss. This medication, which was offered by Eisai Inc., a Tokyo-based drug maker, was designed to alter the brain’s chemical signals that were responsible for the appetite of users. Additionally, the drug helped increase the feeling of being full. This combination effectively helped overweight patients lose weight, particularly when combined with diet and exercise.

There were two types of Belviq prescribed to patients. The first type, simply called Belviq, is a 10 mg pill that is taken twice a day by patients. The second type, Belviq XR, was an extended release form of the medication that was prescribed to patients to take one time per day.

Is Belviq Dangerous?

Since Belviq entered the market in 2012, teams of researchers have been studying the medication, its effects, and whether it was harmful to patients. Teams of researchers studied more than 12,000 people who were provided either Belviq or a placebo. The study was conducted to determine if there was a link between the use of Belviq and the development of heart problems. Although no direct link was made that shows that the medication resulted in heart problems, early studies found a strong link between the use of the medication and the development of various forms of cancer.

In fact, research conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration found that around 7.7 percent of patients who were prescribed Belviq developed some form of cancer. This diagnosis compared to roughly 7.1 percent of people taking the placebo. Over the course of the trial, more than 660 people were diagnosed with 620 primary cancers. Around 423 people who took the placebo were diagnosed with 470 types of cancer. The longer patients took Belviq increased their risk of developing cancer. Although this link was made early on, it was not until 2020 that the medication was taken off the market.

In January 2020, the FDA announced that the clinical trials found a possible increase in the risk of cancer among users. The most commonly diagnosed cancer among patients include:

  • Colon cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Lung cancer

However, various other types of cancer did occur in patients. In addition, patients experienced various other types of side effects from the medication. These include:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness

In February 2020, the FDA requested that the medication be pulled from the US Market. If you were prescribed Belviq and were diagnosed with cancer, it is crucial that you act quickly to protect your legal rights. You may be entitled to compensation that you can use to cover the financial burdens you face.
